About Milissa Aronson

My career as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker spans over two decades. In 1998, I earned a Master's Degree in Social Work, along with a Master's Degree in Non-Profit Management, from New York University and have been working in the mental health field ever since. I have worked as a therapist, clinical supervisor, director, and administrator in a variety of mental health programs in New York and New Jersey, including outpatient clinics, residential treatment centers, and community-based programs.

I am passionate about what I do and about teaching and mentoring others in the mental health field. I have taught dozens of graduate students from Columbia, Fordham, Hunter, NYU, Rutgers, and Seton Hall and hold a Certification to provide Clinical Supervision in New Jersey.

I primarily work with young adults and adults who are dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, or issues related to stress management, significant life changes, work, identity, or performance improvement. In addition to providing talk psychotherapy, I have a Certificate in Sports Social Work from the University of Michigan, am trained in EMDR, Motivational Interviewing, and am Certified in HeartMath Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback.

My favorite personal stress management activities include watching sports, doing home improvement projects, and spending time with one of my favorite therapists, my dog Maggie (the original "Magnolia").

My Approach

I take a collaborative approach in my work and believe that you are the best expert on yourself. Together, we will develop a treatment plan to help you reach your goals in a way that best fits your needs. My overall therapeutic approach is relational, where my goal is to help you better understand how you perceive things and react in relationships and draw connections to how your past experiences may impact your current situation so that you can sustain lasting, improved change. This can be accomplished through Talk Therapy, Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Heart-Rate Variability self-regulation techniques, or a combination of these methods.

While making a sustainable change may take a little time, I understand that, like many people, you may be starting therapy at a time when you are struggling and want to feel better quickly. To help speed the process along, I will provide you with mindfulness techniques and coping skills that fit within your lifestyle in our early sessions so that you can start to feel better and be able to focus your time in therapy addressing the underlying issues that initially triggered your symptoms.

I understand that, while very rewarding, therapy involves addressing complex issues and can be an intense process; I often infuse humor into my work to balance this process and make this work easier for you.

Working Together

Effective therapy starts with the client-therapist relationship. A good fit is essential, and it is important that you feel comfortable with your therapist and the way that they work. I don't want to waste your time and resources by having you come in for an initial appointment only to realize that you may not like working with me or that I may not be the best match to help you with what you need. To avoid this, I schedule a free 15-minute phone call for all potential clients so that you can get to know more about me and my style, and I can find out more about what you need.
